One of the major problems facing many believers today is the problem of unanswered prayers. I have seen a lot of “prayer warriors” that are not reflecting the glory of the Lord. They are saved but the good things that accompany salvation are not seen in their lives. Many of them are disappointed and frustrated all because of unanswered prayers, but that is not the plan of God towards us. We are here to show forth His glory and splendor.
Jeremiah 33:3 “Call unto me, and I will answer thee…”Jeremiah 29:13 “And ye shall seek me, and find me…”
Zechariah 10:1 “Ask of me…”
Psalm 2:8 “Ask of me, and I shall give thee…”
Matthew 7:7 “Ask, and it shall be given you…”
With all these assurances, it should be settled that man is the root cause of unanswered prayers and not God.
Genesis 4:7 (KJV) “If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted?…”
Song of Solomon 2:15 (KJV) Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes.
For our prayers to secure speedy answers, we will have to identify some issues and take them away in order to be enjoying open heaven continually.
1. Wrong Motives James 4:3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
What you are asking for may be right but your heart and motives matter to the Lord. God is not only concerned with what we ask in prayer but is also concerned about our motives.
Why do you want what you are asking for? God searches the thoughts and intents of our hearts and discerns our motives.
Jeremiah 17:10 I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
Matthew 9:4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, “Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?”
Romans 8:27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind…”
Your thought comprises of the real you. These include your desires, prayers and attitude. When you come before the Lord in prayer, He sees more than your words or action; He sees through your thought, that is why we can communicate with God without opening our mouth.
Will the answer glorify you or God? John 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
If the answer to your request is to glorify you and not God, then your motive is wrong. You may actually ask for good things but with a wrong motive and God can not answer such prayers. I am not saying that when God answers a prayer with right motives that you will not benefit from the answer; you will of course, but the praise and glory belongs to God. Do not ask for things to prove to your competitors that you have arrived (like Penninah and Hannah’s Case in 1 Sam. 1) but ask because you are a child of God who deserves good things that pertain to life.
2. Bad Relationship (Marriage)
1 Peter 3:7 (KJV) Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
In some homes, strife is a normal way of life and quarrelling is their identity. Husband and wife are like “cat and dog.” In such homes, prayers cannot be answered because the Spirit of God cannot dwell in such places. Therefore, make up your mind to live peaceably with your spouse so that your heaven will not remain closed.
Psalms 133:1, 3 (KJV) Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.
3. Stubbornness (Hardness of Heart).
Zechariah 7:12-13 (KJV) Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts.
Therefore it came to pass, that a s he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the LORD of hosts:
When a person finds it difficult to appreciate correction, such person’s prayers may be hindered. When you are so adamant that you follow your own way, you are actually closing Heaven over yourself.
4. Unforgivingness
Mark 11:25-26 (KJV) And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.
You cannot say you are fellowshipping with God and bear a grudge against someone.
1 John 4:20 (KJV) If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
Forgivingness hinders prayers. Your heart must be free from all forms of offences before you can appear before the Lord. You must make the act of forgiveness an attitude and a lifestyle so that the enemy will not be able to rob you of your inheritance.
