*AVOID HATRED*

TEXT: *Deuteronomy 19:11-21*

KEY VERSE:
_*“But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.”*_ – (Deuteronomy 19:11,12)

The twin sins of hatred and dishonesty constitute high percentage of evil befalling the world today. While hatred is responsible for huge death records, dishonesty account for collateral damage to individuals, organisations and states. Considering the destruction of lives and properties that hatred has caused in one of the countries in Africa, the parliament of that country in 2018, proposed a hate speech bill with death penalty for its offenders. This was done to reduce the menace of hatred in that country. Hatred is dangerous!

In our text, God reveals murder as a product of hatred and prescribes death as penalty. Although God instructed Israel to separate some cities for refuge into which slayers were permitted to flee, wilful murderers were precluded from that privilege. Also, removal of another person’s landmark in order to make fraudulent gain was forbidden. Such an act was a product of dishonesty. Bearing false witness was also forbidden.

To this extent, God required that every accusation be thoroughly investigated before an accused person could be condemned. Where an accusation was found to be baseless and malicious, however, God demanded that the false accuser be punished. In fact, He demanded that the punishment that should have been meted to the accused would be passed on to the false witness.

Murder from God’s perspective is not restricted to physical killings: *“Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him”* (1 John 3:15). We should endeavour to have genuine love for others. We must not allow the pains of offence to drag on in us as that will lead to hatred. We are instructed to love our enemies, bless those that curse us and pray for them that despitefully use and persecute us (Matthew 5:44).

*THOUGHT FOR THE DAY*:
Beware! Hatred is a forerunner to murder.

*Growing up into Christ*
*Text:* Eph 4:15-16
_”But, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.”_

Spiritual growth is as apparent as physical growth. Every new born is expected to grow, the same way a newly born again believer is expected to grow up in Christ. The ultimate of spiritual growth is to grow into Christ in all things. That is in words, in thoughts and in deeds. Apostle Paul prayed for the believers in Galatia saying, _”My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you.”_(Gal 4:19). Any spiritual endeavour that does not focus on growing up is a complete waste.

*Ingredients for spiritual growth include:*

*#Reading, studying and meditating on the Word of God #*
1 Peter 2:2 says, _”Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.”_ The Word of God is the pure spiritual milk needed for spiritual growth. The word of God provides all the nutrients required for normal growth and development as a Christian. We must crave or long for the word just as a new born does for breast milk. Without the ministry and appropriation of the Word of God, there cannot be any meaningful spiritual growth.

When the devil came to tempt our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, His reply was, _”It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”_ (Matt 4:4). Your spiritual life depends on every word which comes out of the mouth of God. Many are well fed physically but are malnourished in their spirit man. If you feed only your body, the flesh will overpower your spirit man. It is who you feed that will dominate in your life. Feed on the word of God and the flesh will loose it’s power over you.

The prophet once said, _”Your words were found, and I ate them, And Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart; For I am called by Your name, O LORD God of hosts.”_(Jer 15:16). The word of God is good and meat indeed. It produces joy and rejoicing of the soul. When the word of God becomes.your delight, God Himself will delight in you. Make it a practice to eat the word more than you eat any other meal. Give priority to your spirit and you will experience spiritual growth that is beyond the enemy’s reach.

Shalom !

[11/1, 6:56 AM] faithemm2015: A story of two families

Sunday 1st November 2020

‘I have chosen him to teach his family to obey me forever.’ Genesis18:19 CEV

The story of these two families told over a century ago contains lessons that are more relevant now than ever. Family number one. Did you know that the father of acclaimed New England reformer and pastor, Jonathan Edwards, was a clergyman? And his mother was the descendant of a minister? In fact, Edwards’ family includes 14 college presidents, more than 100 university professors, 100-plus lawyers, 30 judges, 60 physicians, over 100 clergymen, missionaries and theology professors, and some 60 authors. Throughout history, there’s scarcely been a great American industry that hasn’t featured an Edwards family member among its chief promoters. Such was the product of one Christian family reared under the most favourable conditions.

Family number two. Members of the infamous Jukes family couldn’t be made to study, wouldn’t work and are reputed to have cost the state of New York millions of dollars. Their entire record is one of pauperism, crime and insanity. From among their descendants, 310 were professional paupers, 440 were physically wrecked by their own wickedness, 60 were habitual thieves, 133 were convicted criminals and 55 were victims of impurity. Only 20 actually learned a trade (10 of those learned it in prison) and this notorious family produced seven murderers.

Yes, if Dennis becomes a menace, he can poison the stream. But if he’s raised to be godly, he can bless an entire family, as well as influence the world for generations to come. So what’s the bottom line here? Simply this: as a parent, if you’re wise, you’ll seek God’s guidance every single day of your life.

*INCREASE LEARNING*

*Text: “A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels.” Prov 1:5*

This month will be special for us, we’ll learn purely from the book of Proverbs. There are certain things you have to keep doing for the rest of your life. We have to keep doing them because they are as relevant as life itself.
There will never be an end to feeding; no man is ever too old to eat. Once a man stops feeding he has sent and invitation to death. Breathing is a lifelong practice. If it were not so those who are very old should be excused from breathing so that the air can be enough for those who are still young.

It’s important for us to also recognize that learning is a lifelong demand for a life that will stay relevant and impactful. Learning is not something that stopped when you finished from school, it’s as important as feeding and breathing. The unfortunate thing is that most of us only associate learning with going to a formal school. This is largely the reason why most times people cannot perform beyond what they were taught in the four-walls of a school. For so many of us as believers we have never learned anything serious about God on our own. So many have never taken any step to pursue knowledge on their own. Thousands have received a material like this and never read it.

Jesus categorically invited us to learn of him and we’ll find rest for our souls. Don’t forget that life is a school. There is never an end to learning. The more you learn positively the more your life is transformed. It’s a basic principle of life that you have to keep learning to become better in life and go higher. We can never function beyond what we know. Get books on your area of challenge and become a better person. This month we’ll be learning purely from the book of Proverbs, am sure you will be blessed.

*CONFESSION:*
I am a learner. My heart is open to receive more of God. My life is getting better and going higher.

*LEARN MORE:* Matt 11:28-29

*PRAYER REQUEST: Thank you Lord for the transforming power of your word through the month of October. Thank you for what you are set to do in November. Psalm 107:20-21*
