*AS IT WAS IN JESUS’ TIME*
*TEXT:* MATTHEW 17:22-27.
_*🔑KEY VERSE* “Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first comes up; and when you have opened his mouth, you shall find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and you” (MATTHEW 17:27)._

In Washington, DC, United States of America, there is the tomb of the Unknown Soldier located within the Arlington National Cemetery. The memorial in this US capital city enjoys a 24-hour watch for the 365 days of the year. When a new armed guard arrives to replace his departing colleague, he received some orders. The words are always the same: “Orders remain unchanged”. This has been so for decades.

Christians have an older and richer tradition of precepts handed us by our Leader Jesus Christ. As He spoke for the second time in the gospel of Matthew about His death and resurrection on the third day, tribute collectors accosted Him and Peter. It represented an opportunity for the miracle of turning the mouth of a fish into a money bank. The Lord did more. He taught that the Christian, though a citizen of heaven, must fulfill his civic duties by paying taxes as He Himself did.

Jesus’ precepts to His followers to honor the state and cooperate with civil authorities when they raise levies for projects that do not offend the Scriptures has come down to us as ‘orders (that) remain unchanged’. The believer is expected to partner the government of the day or the council of his community in the development of the nation or area of residence, regardless of his Christian stance. That the Christian is “not of the world” should not exclude him from performing his civic duties.

*✍THOUGHT FOR THE DAY* True followers of Christ prevent controversy and support responsibility.

*COVER TO COVER* JEREMIAH 1-2.

*MEDITATION*

When to forego your rights

*1. How He responded to disturbing challenges*
a. Ahead of Jesus is the revelation of betrayal by a close friend vv22,23.
b. The reality of impending assassination was very clear to Jesus v23.
c. Yet Jesus still retained calmness, sweet character, patience and amiable relationship with those trying to make unnecessary demands from Him vv24-27.
*Q* Do you have grace to still remain calm and gracious with unpleasant neighbours in the midst of life threatening challenges or pressures?
*Prayer:* O Lord, give me grace to be Christlike and gracious when under unnecessary and unpleasant pressures, tensions and provocations. 🙏
*2. When to forego fighting for your rights*
a. When it has the tendency of leading to violence and unfriendly arguments v27.
b. When it will offend others and cause a breach of brotherliness v27.
c. When it will lead to unnecessary misunderstanding v27.
d. When foregoing it does not take something eternal from you v27.
*Prayer:* Give me the humility, love for peace and grace to be more like Jesus. 🙏

*HYMN* Oh to be like Thee

1
O to be like Thee! blessed Redeemer;
This is my constant longing and prayer;
Gladly I’ll forfeit all of earth’s treasures,
Jesus, Thy perfect likeness to wear.
*Chorus*
O to be like Thee! O to be like Thee!
Blessed Redeemer, pure as Thou art;
Come in Thy sweetness, come in Thy fullness;
Stamp Thine own image deep on my heart.
2
O to be like Thee! full of compassion,
Loving, forgiving, tender and kind,
Helping the helpless, cheering the fainting,
Seeking the wand’ring sinners to find.
3
O to be like Thee! lowly in spirit,
Holy and harmless, patient and brave;
Meekly enduring cruel reproaches,
Willing to suffer, others to save.
4
O to be like Thee! Lord, I am coming,
Now to receive th’ anointing divine;
All that I am and have I am bringing;
Lord, from this moment all shall be Thine.
5
O to be like Thee! While I am pleading
Pour out Thy Spirit, fill with Thy love.
Make me a temple meet for Thy dwelling,
Fit for a life which Thou wouldst approve.

IN CHRIST YOU ARE SPECIAL

The LORD shall establish thee an holy people unto himself, as he hath sworn unto thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, and walk in his ways. And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the LORD; and they shall be afraid of thee.
Deuteronomy 28:9,10 KJV

The Bible declares in the book of 1 Corinthians 12:27: ‘Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. (NKJV) According to the book of Ephesians 5:30: “For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.”(KJV) We are one with Him. He is the head and we are His body. The book of 1 Corinthians 6:19 tells us “that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost”(KJV). And the book of 1 John 4:4 says: “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world”(NKJV)

All these scriptures point to the fact that Christ is in you and you are set apart by virtue of His indwelling presence. This means that you are special to God!  Every believer is special! He is not putting up with you! You matter to Him. The book of Zechariah 2:8 says that whoever touches you has touched Him. You are the apple of His eyes. You are His treasure. You carry a ‘Touch not’ anointing upon your life.

“You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy. (1 Peter 2:9, 10 NKJV)
We are His choice. And don’t ever think that He chose you to embarrass you and make you end in shame. Never! He wants all the people of the earth to see that you are called by His name.

[10/21, 6:16 AM] 919063: *OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL*

DATE: MONDAY 21ST OCTOBER 2019

THEME: SAFE IN HIS HANDS.

MEMORISE:

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Psalm 23:4

READ: Luke 1:70-75

70 As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:

71 That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;

72 To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;

73 The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,

74 That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,

75 In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.

MESSAGE

Today’s Bible reading should inspire confidence of absolute security in those who are children of Abraham through faith in the Son of the Living God (Galatians 3:7-9). The question is, are you a true child of Abraham? As a child of Abraham, David’s confidence in the protection of the God of Abraham moved him to make this exuberant declaration of faith in Psalm 23:4:
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”
In order to put our minds at rest and leave us with absolutely no doubt of His commitment to our security, several passages of the Bible re-echo God’s promise of divine safety to us. The Lord guarantees that He will defend us for His Name’s sake (1 Samuel 12:22, Psalms 106:8, Psalm 23:3). This is significant and very reassuring because we know His Name does not change nor can He deny His Name (Psalm 135:13, 2 Timothy 2:13). It is highly comforting when you realize that your Ally is the Almighty God, but then, you must have a relationship with Him- a Father-child, Shepherd-sheep and Lord-disciple relationship.

The Almighty God recognizes that we are surrounded by enemies in this world, and for that reason He has put a plan in place to save us from them all, through the power of the new covenant in the Blood of Jesus. Why has God done this for us? Luke 1:74-75 answers this question, saying:
“, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.”

As the redeemed of the Lord, there should be no fear in us concerning the enemies. We are the triumphant Church of Jesus Christ, sitting with Him in heavenly places in dominion. We do not walk in fear because fear has torment (1 John 4:18). Fear has pushed a lot of people into doing several abominable things like witchcraft, sorcery and joining all sorts of occult groups. Needless to say, a child of God cannot be found with such, as there is no holiness in occult groups, neither is there righteousness in the company of diviners. Behold, the Lord has made up His mind to defend you if only you will trust Him. Are you in any secret society in order to protect yourself physically or financially? You need to quit today because they cannot help you on the fearful day of the Lord (2 Peter 3:10-13). If you are a child of God, you have no reason to fidget, Jesus is Lord and the Lord of Host for that matter. Therefore, cheer up!

PRAYER POINT:

Father, I thank You for this assurance of my safety and security. Please don’t let me stray away from under Your divine protection.
