[1/14, 6:46 AM] 919063: Use the power of praise

Tuesday 14th January 2020

‘His praise shall continually be in my mouth.’ Psalm 34:1 NKJV

You can praise God too little, but you can never praise him too much. David writes, ‘From the rising of the sun to its going down the Lord’s name is to be praised’ (Psalm 113:3 NKJV). ‘Seven times a day I praise you’ (Psalm 119:164 NKJV). ‘His praise shall continually be in my mouth’ (Psalm 34:1 NKJV). When you are overwhelmed by circumstances, the last thing you feel like doing is praising God. But it’s the first thing you should do, because praise gets your attention off yourself and onto God’s miraculous power.

Jehoshaphat faced an army he had no hope of defeating. But when he started to praise God, his enemies destroyed each other while he looked on in amazement. When Paul and Silas praised God in prison, their chains broke and the doors opened. It’s normal to focus on the problem and forget to praise God, but praise solves problems. Peter writes: ‘the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honour and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ’ (1 Peter 1:7 NKJV).

Start to acknowledge the power of praise and choose to exalt God regardless of how you feel. Praise brings you into God’s presence and positions you for his favour and blessing. You say, ‘But I don’t understand how praise works.’ Think about it like this: you don’t have to understand aerodynamics in order to fly. You just get on the plane and the pilot takes you where you need to go. It’s the same when you praise God – just do it and you’ll get results.

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3

READ: Psalm 42:1-2

As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.

2 My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?

To be poor in Spirit does not mean to lack Spirituality as many people think. Being poor is a state of mind. When a person is poor in Spirit, the fellow is hungry for the Spirit of God. Our memory verse says:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

To be poor in Spirit means that no matter how much you have grown spiritually, you still pant and yearn for more of God’s Spirit in you. Some people attain certain spiritual heights and begin to call themselves spiritual giants. The moment you start feeling like a giant in the things of God, your decline begins. Once I prayed for thirty-six hours non-stop, taking only bathroom breaks. I was feeling very good, believing that I had attained a great height spiritually. The next week, God arranged for me to hear of someone who prayed for thirty-two days non-stop. I was humbled. No matter how much you have done, you must still see yourself as a spiritual baby. Only babies depend *on* their parents for food; once you are a spiritual adult, then you are telling God “Don’t worry, Lord, I can take care of myself” and He will leave you.

Those who are not poor in Spirit enter into the trap of the devil. I remember visiting a country once and my host told me about a great man of God who came to minister sometime in the past. He said the power of God manifested mightily at the crusade so much so that dead persons kilometers away from the programme venue were raised and the sick were healed. Unfortunately, this man of God relaxed and stopped recharging his spiritual batteries. His end was not good at all.

You should be panting for His word and presence more than ever before. If you are not growing, then you are dying. If you used to come early to Church but now go late, your hunger for Him has reduced. If you used to pray one hour every day when you became born again and you still do same now, where is your growth? You need to get hungry for God.

Reflect deeply and write down ways in which your hunger for God has waned. Begin to make amends from today.

Nearer my God to Thee, Nearer to Thee!
E’en tho’ it be a cross that raiseth me;
Still all my song shall be,
Nearer my God, to Thee,
Nearer my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.

Tho’ like a wanderer,
The sun gone down, darkness be over me,
My rest a stone, yet in my dreams I’d be,
Nearer my God, to Thee,
Nearer my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.

Then let the way appear, steps up to heaven;
All that Thou sendest me,
In mercy given; angels to beckon me,
Nearer my God, to Thee,
Nearer my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.

Then, with my waking thoughts, bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs, Bethel I’ll raise;
So by my woes to be,
Nearer my God, to Thee,
Nearer my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.

Or, if on joyful wing, cleaving the sky,
Sun, moon and stars forgot, upwards I fly,
Still all my song shall be,
Nearer my God, to Thee,
Nearer my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee…

SCRIPTURE: Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 1 Corinthians 6:14

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: To mingle wrongly is to struggle eternally; to dine with the wrong company is to die with the wrong company.

Fellowship is a friendly association,”especially with people who share the same or similar interest. The wrong fellowship is one that has the potential to corrupt a person and prevent them from fulfilling their God-ordained destinies.

Please understand this”: The greatest undoing of anybody is fellowshipping or mingling with the wrong people; you can’t mingle wrongly and escape struggles in life. If you are an eagle,”then mingle with eagles; avoid the fellowship of vultures because vultures eat corruption but eagles do not taste corruption. If you are a lion, what are you doing in the company of hyenas? Hyenas eat rotten meat but lions do not eat anything that is rotten.

It was by fellowshipping with the wrong friend (Jonadab) that Amnon ruined his destiny and lost his life eternally on the account of wrong advice. (2 Samuel 13″:1-29).

Beloved,”your company determines your destiny; to mingle wrongly is to struggle eternally; who you follow determines what follows you. To dine with the wrong company is to die with the wrong company.

My counsel is, avoid the wrong association in much the same you would avoid cancer. Anybody who is not going in your direction does not deserve your association. Friendship is not by force but by choice. Love is a command but friendship is a choice; you are to love liberally but relate carefully and selectively.

But you shall not be a victim, in Jesus’ Name.

REMEMBER THIS”: To mingle wrongly is to struggle eternally; to dine with the wrong company is to die with the wrong company.
