[7/23, 6:47 AM] Pastor Emmanuel Oshevire: OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL

DATE: THURSDAY 23RD JULY 2020.

THEME: TAKE HEED.

MEMORISE:

Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. 1 Corinthians 10:12

READ: 1 Corinthians 10:12

1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat;

4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

5 But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

7 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

9 Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.

10 Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.

11 Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

MESSAGE:

“For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia.” 2 Timothy 4:10

Who was Demas? Colossians 4:14 and Philemon 1:24 tell us that Demas was a fellow laborer with Paul, just like Luke. Who wrote the Gospel of St. Luke. How could anybody be that close to Paul and end up back in the world?

I want you to get something clear: there is no one above the possibility of backsliding. The Bible says that Moses spoke to God face to face; he had seen His wrath, yet he disobeyed Him. Don’t think you are above the possibility of backsliding. This was Samson’s mistake. He had won so many battles that he started to feel invincible. So he relaxed in the lap of Delilah. Apostle Paul said that he kept his body under subjection so that he would not mis heaven (1 Corinthians 9:27).

Backsliding does not occur at once; it is a gradual process. The devil makes this process so slow that the one backsliding may not even realize it, when a person reduces the time spent in praying and/or reading his Bible and attending to fewer Christian programmes, before long, it will be normal for the fellow to go a whole day without reading his Bible or talking to God. Once there is a separation, the devil will begin to introduce little things that don’t look like sin; if the fellow accepts those, then he would bring in the little sins and before long, he would have started doing things he once vowed never to do again. The devil may be many negative things, but he is no fool.

Check yourself: are you reducing the time you spend reading your Bible and talking to God every day? Are you beginning to have certain desires that you thought were already dead? If the answer is yes, then you urgently need another piece of iron to sharpen you; you need to be in fellowship with other Christians who can help rekindle your fire.

Take heed, the devil is on the prowl (1 Peter 5:8).

REFLECTION:

Be sober and vigilant. The devil, your adversary is actively seeking whom to devour. Take heed.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Isaiah 35-36.

HYMN 18: MY FAITH LOOKS UP TO THEE.

1. My faith looks up to Thee,
Thou Lamb of Calvary,
Savior divine!
Now hear me while I pray,
Take all my guilt away,
Oh, let me from this day
Be wholly Thine!

2. May Thy rich grace impart
Strength to my fainting heart,
My zeal inspire!
As Thou hast died for me,
Oh, may my love to Thee
Pure, warm, and changeless be,
A living fire!

3. While life’s dark maze I tread,
And griefs around me spread,
Be Thou my guide;
Bid darkness turn to day,
Wipe sorrow’s tears away,
Nor let me ever stray
From Thee aside.

4. When ends life’s transient dream,
When death’s cold, sullen stream
Shall o’er me roll;
Blest Savior, then in love,
Fear and distrust remove;
Oh, bear me safe above,
A ransomed soul!

*PASSION FOR GOD*

*Text: “O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is.” Ps 63:1*

David was a man that was after the heart of God. He was such a victorious man. He was someone that was mightily used of God. He had victory on every side. Our opening verse today revealed to us one major attribute that made all the difference in his life. He had an unparalleled passion for God. He made some grievous mistakes in his life but the passion he had for God was so much to pull him out of his mess. Early will I seek thee means the first priority of my life will be God. God was first on his list of attention for every day. For David everything else could wait until God had taken his place early. David was not a person that will put God on hold while he attends to every other thing.

There will be a serious in-balance in our lives if our passion for other things out weighs our passion for God. This will breed very serious competition in our lives that will be detrimental to our spiritual well being. Nothing of this world has eternal value that should occupy our attention more than God. *Whatever is not of eternal value is eternally useless.* It will be a tragedy to spend a whole life time pursuing after things that hinders our walk with God. At the end of the day we’ll find ourselves empty and unfulfilled.

We can never have too much of God. The more of him we have the better we become. The fish can never have too much of water. Once the fish gets out of water it’s out of life. When you become passionate for God the deceits of this world will lose value in your heart. Your passion for God will drown your appetite for sin and all mundane things. Your passion for God will also stir up his purpose and plans for your life. If you have passion for God you cannot miss your way in life.

*Destiny Helpers part 1*

*Text:* Deut 33:6
“ _Let Reuben live, and not die, nor let his men be few._”

Shortly before he died, Moses pronounced blessings upon the different tribes of Israel. Concerning Reuben he said, ” _Let Reuben live and not die, nor let his men be few._” This is a very strategic prayer as it sets to reverse Jacob’s pronouncement against his first born, Reuben. In Gen. 49:3-4, Jacob said, “…….. _Unstable as water, you shall not excel, because you went up to your father’s bed; Then you defiled it, he went up to my couch._” With this pronouncement, Reuben was doomed to live a mediocre life.

However, Moses’ prayer for Reuben was for him to find destiny helpers in his life. The fewer your men, the fewer your achievements. Destiny or vision helpers are those who the Lord God will send your way to assist you in the fulfillment of your God-given destiny. You are connected to some people who will take your vision as theirs. Without them, your purpose in life may become defeated. Thus, Moses prayed for Reuben that his helpers would not be few.

Although, David was anointed to be King over Israel, he needed his men to make this happen. 2 Sam 23:8-29 chronicled the activities of these people who were referred to as David’s mighty men. Of note were three men who risked their lives through the garrison of the army of the enemy to fulfill David’s wish. 2 Sam 23:15-17 says, ” _And David said with longing, “Oh, that someone would give me a drink of the water from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!_” So the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines, drew water from the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate, took it and brought it to David. Nevertheless, he would not drink it, but poured it out to the Lord. And he said, “ _Far be it from me, O Lord, that I should do this! Is this not the blood of the men who went in jeopardy of their lives?_” Therefore he would not drink it. These things were done by the three mighty men.”

May your “men” be not few. May the Almighty God send to you helpers of destiny in Jesus name, amen.

Shalom* !
